What Does A Firefly Have To Do With Inspiration

Inspiration and motivation can come from many sources. As I went about my day the following words evoked one of those ‘Aha’ moments that sometimes creep into my consciousness very quietly, but have a profound effect.

Henceforth, I will remember the lesson of the firefly who gives off its light only when it is on the wing, only when it is in action.

These words from Og Mandino in The Scroll Marked IX from his classic book “The Greatest Salesman in the World” resonated with me in a particularly strong and clear way today. I know that massive action alone is not the key to success. All four habits are required as I’ve described before; a burning desire, a plan backed by continuous action, a mind closed to discouraging influence, and a friendly mastermind alliance.

But that little statement ‘backed by continuous action’ is fundamental because without it the other three will produce nothing. But a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by some external force. In terms of achievement, what tends to stop progress are the negative thoughts and influences that impinge on us daily. And those same negative forces and discouraging influences prevent forward movement in the first place.

We Acquire Inspiration By Observing Each Other

What struck me today was how the mastermind principle can help immensely by providing the shove that gets one into action. And that same mastermind can provide support and sustenance so the activity continues and eventually becomes habitual and therefor self sustaining.

My two Master Mind partners and I really laid out some measurable goals for the week at our last session. And we reported back today on progress. While we were not perfect in our achievements we provided mutual stimulation and encouragement. It was more a matter of inspiration than an exercise in accountability.

And that inspirational effect was what made me think of the firefly in Mandino’s passage. We were each as the firefly, lighting up our surroundings by our action, brightening the world of those around us and inspiring each other to action.

Terry, this is a beautiful comparison between your mastermind and the firefly in Mandino’s chapter. Although as you say the achievements may not have been perfect, there is perfection in it. All the best!

Kind of you to take the time to read and comment. Perfection comes with persistent practice and I must get back to that Mastermind environment. Recent events have pulled me away from my planned activities. I need to solidify a 90 day plan as Andrew has done. You and he are an inspiration to me..
