Focus On The Present Moment
I live each day as if it is my last is the admonition in The Scroll Marked V in Og Mandino’s The Greatest Salesman in the World. I’ve come to look upon this message as a reminder to live in the present moment, rather than dwell on the possibility this could be my last day in this life. So I focus on the things I do in the present moment and the current day. I make them habits. Here’s what Mandino wrote as recorded by me. Incidentally, if you wonder how it is he came to be called Og, the fact his real name was Augustine Mandino II, is a self explanatory note.
The Scroll Marked V
You’ll note I have removed the word “will” from the text as written by Mandino. It should be obvious why. I have also interjected the phrases “what am I pretending not to know” and “what would the person I intend to become do next?“. These additions are there to remind me that I need to let go what no longer serves me to make room in my life for the things I really want. What I want is described in my DMP. The latter phrase is a reminder that taking action today, right now is essential for attainment of my goals and manifestation of the DMP.
Always Be In The Present
It’s more than a little difficult to just focus on the present and on living each day doing the good, kind and helpful things for which you would like to be remembered. That part that says “as if it is my last” constantly conjures the thought “what IF it IS my last?“. And that results in your thoughts going back to memories and thoughts of “what if …..“, or “I wish I had (or hadn’t)……” said or done something. Perhaps equally useless and unproductive are the forebodings of things yet to come.
So when you read The Scroll Marked V or listen to the recording, focus on the thoughts of hugging your kids, your spouse, your Grandma or a friend whenever the opportunity arises. Think of helping a friend just because he or she is there and needs something. Just develop these habits and be the best you can be every day. You’ll never worry or even give a second thought to “what if this Is the last day of my life?“. It won’t matter. You will be living a life in harmony with natural law and will thus have health, wealth and happiness. These are the ultimate goals inherent in any Definite Major Purpose statement, regardless of the specific details. Live in the present moment. Nothing else really matters.
